Well beaten all five starts last season, the last three times in valuable chases for new stable since February; plummeting down the weights and will appreciate this ease in grade but needs a revival. |

Seemingly nothing like the force of old; not proven beyond 3m either, with heavy defeats on his only two attempts at 3m1f or 3m2f; the former was on latest start when beaten 46l at 150-1 in the Ultima at Cheltenham and all this season's form suggests he will be a big outsider again. |

Three-time winner of the Betfair Chase here (3m, good/heavy); this 12yo isn't the force of old, as evidenced by his fourth place in that Grade 1 last time out, but he's dropped down the weights; awarded this race last year (winner demoted due to banned substance in sample) and he's respected. |

The oldest of these veterans, being a 14yo, and bare form this term leaves a question mark over whether he retains the useful ability that has been present for a long time; however, won this race off 2lb higher last year (soft) and has a good chance if back on song. |

Useful for a long time but has gained last three wins in veterans' events and, having turned 14 since November reappearance, can be opposed off current mark in this field. |

Quickly lost his way after beginning 2022-23 season with excellent win at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft) and there has been no revival on his two appearances this term; leap of faith required to support him here. |

Talented and popular in his prime, fourth behind Allaho in the 2021 Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham; having his first outing since when soundly beaten in handicap at Wetherby on Boxing Day, finishing well behind Fanion D'Estruval; may come on for that run but he certainly needs to; blinkers on. |

Has run well at up to extended 2m7f and a creditable fourth in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase (2m4f, good to soft) at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2021, which makes this look a competitive mark; however, he's been absent since and will need to be at the top of his game in this hot handicap. |

Teenager who ran well for a long way when very respectable sixth in valuable Ascot handicap (3m, good) on seasonal debut in November; pulled up in similar race back there just before Christmas but might be aided by the refitted tongue-tie here and has slipped to a tempting mark. |

Second and fourth in the last two renewals of this and further enhanced his solid record here with another second over this trip in March; can see him running well again but it goes against the grain trends-wise to row in with a 12yo carrying 12st. |

Verdict
Having got back up in the last two strides in this race last year, TWO FOR GOLD may emerge on top again. He needs to perform much better than on his reappearance but four of his rivals also underperformed last time out. The exception is Stolen Silver who tries a new trip and, more worryingly, has to give weight all round. The chief threat, therefore, may emerge from that grand old stager Bristol De Mai who finished on the heels on the winner in this 12 months ago. Third on the list is Sam Brown.[Richard Austen]
