Form & Verdict
Already 21lb higher than for his winning chase debut over Christmas (2m5.5f, good to soft) with only a novice match success against a below-par rival since; vastly improved for fences and the fitting of a hood, though, and chance clear again, especially if able to dominate.

Creditable fourth at Doncaster (3m, good to soft) in December and ran well for a long way before fading into ninth in Scottish Grand National in April but disappointed when dropped in grade at Market Rasen last week and will need to up his game here.

Failed to win last season but contested some hot handicaps; creditable fourth at Doncaster (3m, good to soft) in December and ran well for a long way before fading into ninth in Scottish Grand National in April; on a good mark now and sure to appreciate this ease in grade; one to consider.

Good fourth at Doncaster (3m, good to soft) in December but backward steps in major handicaps both starts since; latest was the 3m2f Kim Muir at Cheltenham and that's the furthest he's been; it's possible that soft ground has been against him but he may get that again here.

Form & Verdict
Upward trajectory of chasing RPRs was interrupted at Wetherby latest but hard to blame that on the step up in trip having made all in a 2m4f hurdle here before (soft); can revive, though this wouldn't be much easier.

Form & Verdict
Best served by a galloping 2m4f, his 2-2 C&D record comprising wins last month and in this race last year, each off slightly lower marks; trip/class against him 13 days ago and more grounds for optimism today.

Raced mainly at around 2m4f and is on the downgrade now; went close off his much-reduced mark in four-runner race at Plumpton (3m1f, soft) in January but safely held twice since; formerly trained by Milton Harris/Anthony Charlton; now with Hariet Dickin; others preferred.

Form & Verdict
Aintree 2m4f novice handicap winner on chasing bow last November (good to soft), and found only a subsequent scorer too good last time; more to come in this sphere but already shaping as if he'll want further.

Made winning seasonal/chase debut at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft) in November and the form of his clear second at Ayr (2m4f, soft) later that month has been well advertised by the winner since; moves up in trip after 111-day break; major player if fully tuned up.

Form & Verdict
Occasional lack of fluency evident at Kempton latest (2m4.5f, good); still above a winning mark despite a 2lb drop but trip/track fine (Sandown winner this time last year) and won't mind if conditions soften a little.

Strong stayer (latest win in December coming over 3m6f on soft at stiff Exeter) but he's inconsistent and has been tailed off in his two subsequent runs, seemingly achieving little when beaten 60l into second last time; no great significance in the return of cheekpieces (effective in blinkers that were back on last time) and others are safer.

Inconsistent and well beaten at Plumpton (3m4f, soft) last month; however, he proved very well suited to this track when winning easily over C&D in December (soft; albeit with eight fences omitted due to low sun) and this 4lb higher mark could prove lenient if he can tap back into that promise; blinkers (has won in them) replace the cheekpieces worn on last four starts.

Backers can take heart that there are no stamina concerns after he eased some 20l clear over 3m6f on soft ground at Exeter last month; that form is perhaps a tad dubious with nearly half the fences omitted due to low sun, but the handicapper could have come down harder than with 5lb rise; remains unexposed as a stayer.

Verdict

This will clearly ask more of Whistleinthedark (second choice) than the novice match he contested last time, and though it’s possible he’ll get an uncontested lead, he may just tee things up for the usually patiently-ridden JACAMAR, who is 2-2 over C&D and yet to run a bad race in 2m4f chases around testing, right-handed tracks. Doctor Ken may already prefer further but is respected nonetheless. [Jeremy Grayson]
