Form & Verdict
Already 21lb higher than for his winning chase debut over Christmas (2m5.5f, good to soft) with only a novice match success against a below-par rival since; vastly improved for fences and the fitting of a hood, though, and chance clear again, especially if able to dominate.

One of two progressive contenders for Laura Morgan; 4-4 since switched to chasing, most recently winning by 6l in small field at Perth (2m4f, good to soft) in April; faces a harder task off new mark at this level but could improve further the way he's going; hard to dismiss.

Has won three of his four starts for this yard and passed his stiffest test yet when outstaying an in-form rival over 2m2f at Kempton (good to soft; pair clear); has every chance of defying just a 4lb rise.

Has done very well since joining this yard and has easily made all in this hood on his first two chase starts (2m5f, good to soft/good); today's assignment is tougher but this progressive 8yo may well be up to it.

Form & Verdict
Upward trajectory of chasing RPRs was interrupted at Wetherby latest but hard to blame that on the step up in trip having made all in a 2m4f hurdle here before (soft); can revive, though this wouldn't be much easier.

Chasing this season, 4-5 in a four-runner handicap over C&D when off the mark in this sphere last time (runner-up won well on starts either side); pretty consistent this term and wore a tongue-tie on last three outings; firmly in calculations, with serious rain no problem.

Form & Verdict
Best served by a galloping 2m4f, his 2-2 C&D record comprising wins last month and in this race last year, each off slightly lower marks; trip/class against him 13 days ago and more grounds for optimism today.

Last 17 runs have been over fences, with last season's standout effort being a Leicester win in February (2m4f, good); quite disappointing in the meantime, and difficult to know what he'll make of this belated return to hurdling.

Form & Verdict
Aintree 2m4f novice handicap winner on chasing bow last November (good to soft), and found only a subsequent scorer too good last time; more to come in this sphere but already shaping as if he'll want further.

Made winning seasonal/chase debut at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft) in November and the form of his clear second at Ayr (2m4f, soft) later that month has been well advertised by the winner since; moves up in trip after 111-day break; major player if fully tuned up.

Form & Verdict
Occasional lack of fluency evident at Kempton latest (2m4.5f, good); still above a winning mark despite a 2lb drop but trip/track fine (Sandown winner this time last year) and won't mind if conditions soften a little.

His form was up and down last season and he was soundly beaten on his recent reappearance at Chepstow; however, he improved a bundle for last November's comeback run to win at Fontwell (2m5f, good) next time, and he also scored at Newbury (2m6f, soft) in March; he's a possible contender.

Two chase wins last season, latterly when rallying tenaciously to prevail by a head at Newbury (2m6f, soft) in March; absent since a duff effort in April, though, and probably doesn't have much margin for error off current mark; swaps blinkers for refitted cheekpieces.

Finished behind Nocte Volatus two starts ago but made it three wins from his last nine starts when clinging on at Newbury 15 days ago; first pair in that race finished well clear so 6lb rise fair enough; live contender.

Verdict

This will clearly ask more of Whistleinthedark (second choice) than the novice match he contested last time, and though it’s possible he’ll get an uncontested lead, he may just tee things up for the usually patiently-ridden JACAMAR, who is 2-2 over C&D and yet to run a bad race in 2m4f chases around testing, right-handed tracks. Doctor Ken may already prefer further but is respected nonetheless. [Jeremy Grayson]
