Has two hurdle wins at around 2m (on good to soft) to his name but hard to make a case for him on anything he has shown in the past two years.

Gained his Flat wins in the autumn over 2m/2m2f; subsequent hurdles efforts at about 3m; veteran who may not be crying out for this drop back to sharp 2m5f under this code.

Made all over hurdles at Catterick in March but pulled up at Hexham next time; bounced back to form returned to the Flat nine days ago, keeping on into fourth over this C&D; each-way chance.

Ridden from the front when gaining a breakthrough win over hurdles in 3m1f Catterick handicap 21 days ago; this fair winning stayer on the Flat can make his presence felt despite a 5lb rise.

Capable of very useful form for Henry de Bromhead; however, record for current stable is far from convincing and latest defeat came in lower grade at Newcastle; hopes of revival are pinned on first-time blinkers (replacing cheekpieces worn the last twice).

Won four-runner race at Beverley (2m, soft) in July but out of form since; soundly beaten last time in the Cesarewitch here for the third year running; well handicapped if this proved one of his good days.

Well beaten in this race in 2021 and 2022 and even further adrift in the Trial three weeks ago on his only other race at Newmarket; good ground for all three of those was probably not ideal and he'd be well handicapped if this proved one of his best days, but others look more solid.

Verdict

This may prove a good opportunity for THE GRAND VISIR to end a long losing spell. He’s a major contender on form and stays all day. Jason The Militant has stamina to prove at this sort of distance on the Flat but, judged on peak figures, looks the biggest danger provided he sees it out. Having won over C&D two weeks ago, Black Kalanisi may be able to outrun his rating.[Steve Boow]
