Form & Verdict
Raced only on going softer than good; disappointing on second start but has otherwise shown steady improvement and opened his account at Nottingham (1m2f; handicap debut) most recently; although not crying out for the drop back to 1m, has possibilities with the ground in his favour.

2yo win was 1m2f on soft; no improvement this season and although his sixth of 13 in the London Gold Cup at Newbury (1m2f, good; unraced on firmer) last time was creditable, others seem to shout out more loudly for 1m4f.

Form & Verdict
Raced only at 7f on soft/good to soft; well held in a stronger Listed event two starts ago; that defeat is flanked by wins at Catterick, impressive (won by 11l) in nursery latest; that performance gives him a leading chance back up in class and he's likely to stay the new trip.

Won the Celebration Mile at Goodwood in 2024; creditable third, faring best of the runners who came off steady pace, in Group 2 at Chester (good) upped to 1m2f last time; unexposed at this distance and enters calculations despite carrying a 3lb penalty for Listed success (1m, soft) last autumn.

Ended last season with a pair of 1m victories, the latest in a Nottingham Listed event (soft); not totally disgraced when fifth of eight in a Group 3 at Dusseldorf (1m, heavy) on last month's return, but that does indicate his limitations; races beyond an extended 1m for the first time; stable also runs Royal Rhyme.

Belied his 100-1 odds with a remarkable success in the Triumph at this meeting (2m1f, good to soft) last year on hurdles debut, collaring Lulamba who subsequently reversed placings with him at Punchestown and is a leading contender in today's Arkle; ran below expectations at Royal Ascot but ran promisingly, with a view to this race, in the Irish Champion Hurdle on return from layoff (got detached in the back straight, ending up with plenty to do, then stayed on for third of five); could be open to plenty of further improvement with that outing under his belt and given his very low mileage in this sphere; very interesting back at Cheltenham.

Made his stable/hurdles debut in the Triumph at Cheltenham, belied odds of 100-1 to win by a neck; second at Punchestown in May (despite racing freely) confirmed his high standing; ran much too freely when strongly fancied for the 2m4f Ascot Stakes.

Trained last year by Ralph Beckett, favourite when below form in the 1m1f Cambridgeshire on final outing (also below form on sole run on good to firm); made his stable/hurdles debut in March, in the Triumph at Cheltenham no less, but belied odds of 100-1 to win by a neck; second at Punchestown in May (despite racing freely) confirmed his high standing in that sphere, so he's a high-profile candidate for this return to Flat, over a very new Flat trip but his trainer usually picks the right ones for these races.

Pretty useful on the Flat at his best, superior to stablemate Ribba Hill; ridden out to win at Taunton (2m, good) after a break and the winner got away from him (he was beaten 12l) when he was penalised here over 2m4f; can be given another chance despite another 2lb, especially back in trip.

Pretty useful on the Flat at his best; didn't show much in first four hurdle runs but he really got his act together when landing a gamble in a Taunton handicap (2m, good) last Tuesday; has a penalty but that was a convincing win and he's respected on this step back up in trip.

Pretty useful on the Flat at his best but lost his way in that scene last May/June and has made a quiet start over hurdles; 33-1 and upped to 2m5f when pulled up on handicap hurdle debut last time.

Ran well on soft last season but below form on heavy at Newbury 12 days ago; outsider all four starts this term and has not made an impact in any of them (bled from the nose on reappearance) so others are preferred.

Below-form third when favourite for the 7f nursery at the meeting last year; fourth in a Curragh Group 3 next time was good but she has suffered three heavy defeats in Listed races since (bled from the nose on reappearance); plenty of doubts after that and she looks on a stiff mark anyway.

Verdict

Although bottom of this pack on bare figures, promising PONIROS is open to any amount of progress and has a likely tactical edge assuming he again leads. He could well boss this small field and follow up his Nottingham debut win. Gray’s Inn, who has a fighting chance in receipt of 5lb from the colts, is second choice ahead of Ice Max who commands respect on the back of his wide-margin nursery success.[Steve Boow]
