Form & Verdict
Winner of Grade 1 novice chase at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft) in 2022 and although he achieved smart efforts in defeat that autumn he has been highly tried and hard to fathom since; might well have needed his latest hurdle run but suspicion that wind issues have held him back over the years, having had another surgery (his fourth) since last seen in November.

Well-held last of three runners over hurdles on sole outing this term; had wind surgery (his fourth) since; very useful chaser on his day and bagged Grade 1 honours over 2m4f at Aintree (as a novice) two years ago; possibilities off this mark, provided he's back on song.

Highly tried and lost his way over fences last season after two good seconds over this trip before Christmas; now reverts to hurdling and he's certainly interesting on his third in the 2021 Aintree Hurdle, while a 10l win in the 2022 Manifesto Novices' Chase (again 2m4f, good to soft) underlines his liking for this course; carries risks but not ruled out by any means.

Form & Verdict
Classy at 2m4f-3m in his prime but he had a career-changing fall in October 2021 and it's been a long road back; however, he raced with zest in first-time cheekpieces at Ascot (2m3f, good) last month when, after getting outpaced in the straight, he rallied after the last into a close third; has a real chance at the weights, having dropped 23lb since his peak mark.

Form & Verdict
Had two lengthy absences since late 2021 but the weight fell off him and he took full advantage at Cheltenham in December (2m4f, soft; first-time cheekpieces, retained); slowly away and soon lost interest at Warwick last week, when eventually pulled up, but easy to imagine a different outcome off a still-favourable mark.

Rejuvenated by first-time cheekpieces when winning veterans' chase by 7l here (2m4f, soft) in December but looked out of sorts when pulled up on next three outings; blinkers given a whirl today.

Form & Verdict
Three chase wins in small fields at about 2m4f for Paul Nicholls (on ground ranging from good to soft to good to firm) but he ran flat on final start for the yard under conditions that should have suited; has it to prove for new connections back from a break.

Form & Verdict
In fine fettle when winning 2m chases at Newcastle and Carlisle last spring but pulled up on next three starts; recaptured form when winning off his lower hurdle mark here ten days ago (2m4f, good to soft) and he could well give a bold show from the front now back chasing.

Form & Verdict
Stays well and his latest chase win came over 3m at Uttoxeter (soft) in September. fair effort when third of five in a useful 2m3f hurdle (good) at Hereford last month but this isn't really his trip.

Failed to give his running over fences last time but ran really well at Ascot the time before and he's capable over hurdles; not dismissed.

Verdict

All five runners have experienced swings in their form over the last 12 months but SHAN BLUE looked on the way back to an approximation of his old form at Ascot and a repeat of that would make him hard to beat. Baron De Midleton put a dire sequence behind him when winning over hurdles last time and he can be the main danger as Millers Bank is an unknown quantity these days, these conditions are on the sharp side for Risk And Roll and Cepage soon pulled stumps at Warwick last week.[Emily Weber]
