Form & Verdict
Front-runner; reliable around this track, where he's won four times and was second in five-runner races on his last two outings; latest was just his third attempt over fences and he has a 5lb lower mark in this sphere than over hurdles; the step back up in trip will suit; player.

Six-time course winner; not the force of old and has become inconsistent but looked in good nick when scoring at Wetherby (3m, good) in March, and last month's C&D third was perfectly respectable.

Form & Verdict
Claimer ridden this term but not today; runner-up on reappearance at Chepstow (2m7f, heavy) and went one better at Exeter (3m, good to soft) in November; needs to bounce back from a poor show at Wincanton (3m1f, heavy; favourite) where he made most and kept jumping to his left, but not dismissed.

Won good-quality handicaps at Aintree (2m5f) and Cheltenham (3m2f) towards end of 2024; not at best in 2025 but he shaped as if retaining ability; missed the Grimthorpe at Doncaster in February due to soft ground; drying conditions should help and, back to his last winning mark, he's a possible.

The writing was on the wall very early when pulled up at Musselburgh latest and it's hard to be confident on the back of that; however, this 7yo has enjoyed a progressive season otherwise, completing a hat-trick with his win here (3m2f, good to soft) in December before solid third at Wincanton (3m2f, good to soft); can make bold bid if bouncing back.

Last won in January 2021 but there were two seconds in December 2022, another last May and he's shown that plenty of ability remains in his two runs this winter; 12lb lower than this time last year; interesting.

Without a win since January 2021 and he hasn't really been threatening this winter, especially so at Doncaster most recently when the first beaten (3m, soft); wouldn't be the percentage call.

Form & Verdict
Lightly raced 9yo whose latest win was at this track in a novice hurdle in March 2021; third in handicap hurdles in his last four outings; needs better than his two runs this winter and while this step back up in trip may well suit, he has more to prove having unseated at the first in December 2022 on his only chase start.

The furthest he's been was 3m2f on heavy at Uttoxeter last January and he won that by 11l; would probably have scored there again on reappearance (3m, soft; cheekpieces second time) last month but for a shocking error at the final fence; that's not the only late blunder from him and he's been raised another 5lb, but he could easily have more to give.

His three runs at this track came on last three outings and he ran well every time, winning on second occasion (3m1f, soft) but perhaps stretched by 3m4f in four-way finish to the Lincolnshire National on latest (keeping on, but having travelled much the best); bold show looks on its way.

Verdict

It’s a small but competitive field. O’CONNELL (nap) is probably the most striking candidate, dropping back in trip after his close fourth here in the Lincolnshire National, but a move back up in trip heightens interest in course specialist Giovanni Change, whose chasing career is just getting going, while Shanty Alley and No Regrets also look serious players.[Richard Austen]
