Hurdles career seems to have gone off the rails, soundly beaten in the Imperial Cup three weeks ago after winter break; however, he was second in this race last year (good to soft; after a worse show in Imperial Cup) and won the 2m2f Chester Cup on soft next time; 4lb higher than at Chester and may need every yard, but he's one to note.

Hooded all starts and often races freely, as when fourth at Royal Ascot last June on first go at 1m6f; sent on over 7f out but caught in the final strides at Wolverhampton in November on second attempt at this trip; tongue tied last two outings but not today; has an excellent record on soft (112; unraced on heavy) and won well first time out last term, so has a shout if he's not too free.

Has won on soft, best form on faster ground; 0-9 this season but nearly won at Musselburgh in August; stiff task last time; three-time Pontefract scorer and looks interesting off a workable mark back here.

Verdict

It would be no shock if last year’s runner-up Metier again stayed on to serious effect and an excellent record on soft ground points to Chillingham, for all that he often races freely. However, slight preference is for STRUTH, who may well have more to offer at this trip and could benefit from the gelding operation, while the racefit hurdle winner Sweet Fantasy may prove the chief danger on her first appearance at 1m6f. The selection is one of four trained by Charlie Johnston and his Yorkindness is another to take seriously if further rain means that this turns into a right slog.[Richard Austen]
