Form & Verdict
Won quite valuable course bumper a year ago and got off the mark over hurdles at second attempt, on heavy ground at Haydock in December; very creditable fourth in Grade 2 race here (2m2f, good to soft) last month and a major player in these calmer waters.

Won a Class 3 handicap at Haydock last season off this mark so wouldn't be too dismissive about his chances despite failing to reach anything like the same level in two of his three races this campaign.

On a handy mark on last winter's form and he was an encouraging fourth of nine over C&D recently on his second start back from a long absence; however, this is a higher grade than he's used to; could be vulnerable.

Others have less to prove regarding current form but he shaped at Haydock last month as though he may have needed that comeback run; on a competitive mark and he's well suited by testing ground; not discounted.

Made all in soft-ground Irish point a year ago and followed up in modest maiden hurdle at Market Rasen (2m4f, good) on rules debut two months later; well beaten when reappearing here in December (2m6f, soft), though, and off for another 99 days since; hooded for first time; others look stronger.

Created pretty good impression when making all in good race at Ayr (2m, good to soft) on rules debut in November but two lesser efforts have followed, the latter over C&D (soft) in February; still has potential, but returns here with a point to prove.

Exploited a reduced mark to win easily in a small field at Ayr (2m4f, soft) last month and he's also effective on good/good to soft ground; his yard has done very well over these fences but from out of the handicap he's running off a mark 12lb higher than last time, and needs a career best.

Two wins in small-field chases last season and ran creditably on his first two outings this term; those, however, have been followed by two heavy defeats; well handicapped were he to revive but he's not proven beyond 2m1f.

He can make mistakes and was pulled up at Fairyhouse just 12 days ago in first-time cheekpieces (retained); however, he jumped to the left and returns to a left-handed track for the first time since his promising second on chase debut at Haydock (2m4f, soft); won 3m maiden hurdle here; interesting.

Looked quite promising in novice hurdles in 2021-22 and quickly developed into a very useful chaser last season (three wins, twice on heavy ground); not seen since tailed off in valuable 3m1f Aintree handicap chase just under a year ago and today's drop to 2m is probably not in his favour but he could simply be too good for today's rivals.

0-10 over hurdles; ran quite well in Newcastle maiden (2m4f, good) in March, after a break, but weakened tamely from penultimate flight in 2m4f handicap here (good to soft) in April; back in trip today; others preferred.

Verdict

Gold Cup Bailly showed some very useful chase form over 2m4f+ last season and could quite plausibly outclass this field but he’s been absent for nearly a year and is a tricky horse to weigh up in this 2m hurdle. Perhaps the answer will be BERTIE’S BALLET, who did very well to finish fourth in a 2m2f Grade 2 here last month, having been quite badly hampered in a first-flight melee. Ayiko is next on the list.[Chris Wilson]
