Form & Verdict
Improved on juvenile form last year when he raced exclusively in France; Group 3 winner on soft at Saint-Cloud (10.5f) on second start of the campaign; after midsummer break, beaten 3l by subsequent Arc winner Ace Impact at Deauville before lesser effort in Prix Niel over 1m4f, although he has shaped a few times like he wants that trip; open to more improvement but perhaps after he has this run under his belt.

Smashing servant is a multiple stakes winner including this race two years ago and will handle the ground; third on reappearance in last year's renewal when leaders got away on him but he's generally very effective when fresh and is a leading contender.

Smart 2yo for Michael O'Callaghan; beat Auguste Rodin in course maiden on debut and won the Beresford Stakes over 1m (yielding) when last seen in September 2022; unraced for the Gosdens and now steps up in trip on stable debut; every chance of staying 1m2f on pedigree but stiff task after such an absence.

Form & Verdict
Mudlark won a Group 1 here in 2021; has had physical issues and hasn't come close to that form for some time although was Listed-placed over 1m4f here in November; been hurdling since and fair to say he's been underwhelming in that sphere given his Flat rating; race fitness a plus but doubt it'll be enough.

Enjoyed a career highlight when winning the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in 2021; very nearly matched that achievement when first-past-the-post in this race last year, demoted for causing interference to Ndaawi; no sign of that standard of form in valuable handicap over hurdles or on the Flat since then; still 5lb higher than 12 months ago.

Well beaten in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot 2023 on her first attempt at 1m4f and returned to the trip only on latest outing, when comfortably moving 4l clear in the closing stages at Saint-Cloud (very soft); that was a career best, in only a Listed race compared to today's Group 1 but she may now have more to offer at this sort of trip and is in each-way contention.

Really good start to last season, winning heavy-ground Group 3 at Leopardstown on first start, second in Dante and running-on third in Derby; bombed out in the Irish Derby before running respectably when just behind Lafayette in Leopardstown Group 3; might be better over 1m4f but the one to beat on the figures if they've got him back to his best and Lee should suit him well.

Verdict

A clatter of these have a similar chance on ratings with White Birch the one with a bit in hand in that respect. He’s a contender if they’ve got him back to his best with new rider Billy Lee likely to suit him well but multiple stakes winner LAYFAYETTE won’t mind conditions and generally goes well fresh so he is taken to land this for a second time. Greenland and Crypto Force might come on for the run but Village Voice, a winner on her return last term, is another that you wouldn’t rule out. [Mark Nunan]
