Form & Verdict
1m2f winner for David Simcock in January 2023; ran well on his first run for Tom Clover one year ago but bled when flopping two months later and he's finished out the back in three runs for this stable since November; the addition of a hood can help but there are risks involved dropping to 7f.

Without a win since summer 2024 but her second at Leicester (7f, good) in April was a good effort and she didn't run badly when sixth from awkward draw at Wetherby (7f, good to firm) this month; 2-3 at this track (both wins over C&D in 2022) and may well be the answer.

Wide-margin winner of a 6f maiden (soft) at Nottingham last May, her only turf appearance; three AW runs this year haven't suggested she was ahead of her mark but this is a slight ease in grade.

Won two 6f handicaps on ground slower than good last season; ended her 4yo campaign with a good second over C&D (heavy) in October and the winner has flourished since (front two well clear); 2lb rise may underestimate her; considered back from 178 days off.

No AW win since March 2024; respectable showings, behind in-form rivals, over a range of trips (6f-1m) recently, without doing enough to suggest that she's primed to strike; drop back to 7f is helpful and she might have place possibilities; one of two for Iain Jardine.

Verdict

This looks a strong race of its type with several handicappers of interest on show. Pallas Lord, winner of this race two years ago, has been carrying all before him at Newcastle this winter and he’s high on the list, while Ey Up Its Jazz is respected with a recent run behind him. The two standout contenders look to be Albeseeingyer, who is still some way from reaching the ceiling of her ability, and GENTLE ELLEN (nap), with preference for the Barron-trained mare. She won twice over 6f last season but it was her final outing, when second over C&D to a rival who is now rated 16lb higher (pair 5l clear of the third), that makes her of major interest up just 2lb.[Paul Smith]
