Form & Verdict
Has not had much racing for his age and never better than this summer, producing another career best when runner-up at Goodwood (about 1m1f, good), going down narrowly to one who was ahead of his mark, both suffering interference; up 2lb; solid form chance back at 1m.

Fifth of 16 in this last year in a race that favoured those ridden more prominently and he's been in career-best form at Sandown on his last two starts, posting a win (1m, good) and a very creditable third of 12 (1m2f, good); could be involved.

Usually gives his running and won with a bit in hand over 1m here two weeks ago (1m, good); goes further this afternoon and off a career-high mark (4lb higher), so likely to need more.

Won 2yo debut over 6f at Naas; best 3yo form when going close in a 7f Listed race there last May but he's been big prices and down the field in three starts for this yard (1m and 7f); down 9lb since the first of them but that may not be enough.

A handicapping case can be made on last year's Irish form but he's been slow to get going for this yard and a wide stall is unlikely to help him stage a revival.

His wins have come on good or heavy ground but he's effective on good to firm; has been and up down since his win at Glorious Goodwood last summer but he scored at Nottingham (8.3f) in May and backed that up with a creditable fifth in a big field at Epsom the following month; returns after a short break but he could go well on this drop back in grade.

First two wins on AW; good start for this yard when winning at Redcar (1m, good to firm) in April but he's beaten a total of one rival in two turf starts since and failed to find much when dropped to 7f on Southwell AW last time (first-time blinkers, retained); has enough to prove at present.

Seems well suited by York and followed an encouraging reappearance there with a big-field win over this trip (good; effective on heavy) on that course in June; perhaps has share of weight now but a return to 1m and the fitting of cheekpieces could spice things up.

Useful effort when winning on second start, making all over 7f on Kempton AW last August; a Group 3 next time proved too much, too soon, and he wasn't seen again until making his handicap debut at Newmarket (1m, good to firm) last month, where he ran with more promise than the beaten distance suggests; drying ground a help and open to improvement.

By Frankel out of a 1,000 Guineas winner; odds-on favourite on Newbury debut (6.5f, soft) in October and he forged clear to win with lots in hand; well-held third under a penalty at Kempton in December but that was behind a smart prospect who finished third in the Craven (Group 3) this spring; sets the standard on that latest form and he's a big player on his return.

Verdict

Boyfriend has run some terrific races this year and his recent Goodwood second probably topped them all but preference is for the unexposed 3yo COLOURBAND. The Crisfords’ runner was helped by the return to this trip in a tongue-tie when winning at Windsor and the way he raced through the closing stages suggests this more demanding finish will suit. Shipbourne has been gelded since letting his supporters down at Newmarket and he and Looka are others with potential.[Emily Weber]
