Placed in both points (on soft and yielding to soft) before winning on his bumper debut at Market Rasen (2m, good) in May; he's a likeable prospect but defying a penalty in this field may prove tough.

A fair bumper performer but he failed to build on his Plumpton novice third in November when pulled up at Chepstow (2m3f) the following month; he looks handily weighted on his handicap debut however so still needs considering, especially if the market vibes are positive.

Always wears a tongue-tie; on a sharp upward curve when taking this 12 months ago by some 15l (on good to soft); makes his defence off an 11lb higher mark but on the back of a return to form at Cheltenham (in cheekpieces; wore a visor in this last year); course form here always ticks a big box and can run well again.

Won in January in his first two chases (3m/3m2f, soft/heavy) then lacked fluency over his fences when second at Wincanton (3m2f, good to soft); bar one small blip he jumped much better at Kempton (3m, good to soft) 17 days ago when romping home in the Ladbrokes Trophy; hit with 12lb rise but that may not stop this highly progressive 7yo, who was very impressive last time.

Has the best hurdles form in this field and his good efforts (twice runner-up) over fences last season were even better; however, he was below form in first-time cheekpieces on penultimate outing and failed to complete on starts either side, the latest 11 days ago; that dents his case today (in returning cheekpieces) but he is the standout on form.

Verdict

The Sam Thomas-trained KATATE DORI is a half-brother to (among others) stablemate Shomen Uchi, who showed considerable promise in bumpers last season, and he earns the vote on his debut. There are several other interesting newcomers and narrow Market Rasen winner School Days Over could be vulnerable under his penalty. The betting could be informative regarding the Nicky Henderson pair of Immortal (second choice) and Ted Da Titan, as well as Goodwin and Highway One O Four whose trainer Chris Gordon has done very well in bumpers this season. The Paul Nicholls-trained filly Larchmont Lass is another to consider.[Ben Hutton]
