Defied this mark in a 3m2f handicap here (soft) last December but he was generally disappointing in final four runs last year including a pulled-up effort at Perth in April; has something to prove after 199 days off and his tactical speed will be tested back at this trip.

Form & Verdict
Returned after wind surgery with a narrow front-running win in this race (good to soft) last year; well held in final three runs last season but he's had another wind operation and is back on last winning mark; interesting contender on return and it wouldn't be a surprise if he made a bold bid.

Won a 3m handicap chase at Perth (soft) in May 2021 but he's not finished closer than 9l to a winner in five subsequent runs; makes his seasonal return off 5lb lower than for last win but he's now 1-12 over fences and others are preferred; regular cheekpieces are removed.

Four-time hurdle winner (2m-2m4f), who is unexposed over fences; creditable second in a chase handicap at Hexham (1m7f, good) on his last run but that was over two years ago; returns from a massive absence as a 9yo and he's probably best watched.

Verdict

Lucinda Russell has two interesting contenders in Without Conviction, who was beaten less than 3l in similar conditions at Hexham on her reappearance last month, and Well Above Par, who won this race off the same mark on his seasonal return last year. However, it is hard to get away from the progressive 5yo BIG CHANGES (nap), who is on a roll after his comfortable wins in chase handicaps at Sedgefield and Ayr and is a major player again in his bid to make it 3-4 over fences.[David Moon]
