Form & Verdict
Won her sole bumper and she made it 2-5 over hurdles with her last-gasp win in a mares' novice at Hexham (2m4f, good to soft) in April; drops back in trip on her handicap/seasonal debut but she pulled clear with an odds-on rival last time and her first hurdle win came over 2m on soft; respected.

Finished down the field on the Flat in her last two runs during the summer but she has a record of 2-4 over hurdles including a comfortable success over 2m1f (good to soft) in her last run in this sphere; returns from 159 days off but she looks interesting on her handicap hurdle debut.

Made the frame in three Irish maiden hurdles (2m/2m4f) in March/April, but after leaving Gavin Cromwell, she was disappointing at Cartmel in June; still unexposed and now switches to a handicap but has questions to answer after another break.

Won at Wetherby (2m, good) on debut in February and has finished placed in all three runs since but she was beaten 14l when a fading third in a Perth novice (2m, good to soft) in her final run last season; still has potential but she's not really progressed so far and needs to raise her game on handicap debut.

Won at Wetherby (2m, good) on her debut last February; expensive to follow in next seven starts but she got back on the scoresheet when landing a Stratford handicap (good to soft; second-time cheekpieces) last month; that was a narrow success but she held off an in-form rival and is only 2lb higher here; big player again for yard that won this last year.

Won Irish point by 10l last spring; has had three runs over hurdles since and she won a Musselburgh handicap (1m7f, good to soft) in March before chasing home a subsequent Listed winner at Kelso later that month; only 1lb higher on her return and she should have more to offer this season; shortlisted.

6yo who won three handicaps (1m7f-2m3f, good/soft) last season but she didn't fire in her final run last term and was well held again at Stratford on her return last month; only 2lb higher than for last success but she needs to get back near her best.

Not beaten far over hurdles and fences in her three runs since the cheekpieces went on, from 2m4f to 2m7f (good or good to soft); however, she looks high in the weights unless she benefits from wind surgery and a visor.

Seemed to respond well to first-time cheekpieces when placed in big-field handicap hurdle at Huntingdon (2m4f, good to soft) in January and wasn't beaten far when third of four on recent chasing debut there (2m7f, good); ought to be on the premises again here.

Won three handicap hurdles last season (1m7f-2m3f, good/soft) and returned to form in first-time cheekpieces to finish third of 17 over 2m4f here 13 days ago; has stamina to prove over this longer trip but should make a chaser.

Won two handicaps last season but she didn't have much in hand at Musselburgh (2m4f, good to soft) in March and couldn't hang in there at the same track in her final run last term; that was another decent effort but this 9yo has some work to do against several unexposed rivals on her return.

She's a 22-race maiden and it was just a weak selling handicap in which she was a 1l runner-up at Market Rasen (2m, good to soft) on Boxing Day; however, it was still an encouraging run on just her second start for this trainer, and she could have more to offer for the yard; not ruled out.

Struck form in the autumn, most notably when holding on well to win from the front at Hexham (2m4f, soft), but ran poorly this month, after a break, and needs to have taken significant benefit from that outing.

Verdict

An interesting race in which the vote goes to RAE DES CHAMPS, who finished well to win on her handicap debut at Musselburgh in March before ending last season with a second behind a major improver in a Class 2 event at Kelso. Marsh Wren won novice events in two of her last three starts last term and she’s feared most off what looks a workable mark on her return. Third choice is Bonne Vitesse, who has also scored twice in this sphere and is respected on her handicap hurdle debut.[David Moon]
