Form & Verdict
Record of 1-9 over hurdles but looks set to make a better chaser judged on his debut success in a 2m2f handicap at Taunton where he was clear four out and just had to be kept up to his work; good value for his winning margin as they went a fair gallop; 6lb rise very fair.

Dual 2m2f course winner last season; not at best on either outing this term but ran well to a point in stronger race than this at Sandown (2m4f, good to soft) a fortnight ago and is sure to be suited by the return to this track; might be the answer.

Form & Verdict
Handicapper left the mark untouched after winning a maiden hurdle at Warwick (2m3f, good) on his final run last season and he looked well treated when making a stylish chasing debut at Fakenham (2m5f, good to soft; 6-4f), despite his rider putting up 2lb overweight; hard to ignore his claims off 3lb higher here.

Did well for cheekpieces going on last year, winning three times at 2m3f-2m5f, latterly off 3lb lower, and going a stone and a half up the weights; 2m7f looked to find him out at Newbury last month and this is less competitive back down in trip; holds decent claims.

All good since the cheekpieces went on, winning three times (2m3f-2m5f, good to soft/soft); kept on well for third off today's mark at Exeter (2m3f, good to soft) last month and returning to further looks the right move.

Kept hitting the woodwork over hurdles and it was the same again on chase/handicap debut at Fontwell (2m3f) when going down narrowly; perhaps a mistake two out cost him and a 4lb rise isn't the end of the world.

Won twice over hurdles in the spring (2m4f/2m5f), his latest success off 1lb higher; has returned to fences the last twice (now 0-5) and after a 9l defeat at Exeter (2m1f) he was a shade disappointing at Kempton (2m4f, good); others might be more progressive.

Easily defied a 7lb rise for his Exeter win when strolling clear at Ascot (2m5f, good), albeit in a race that completely fell apart in behind; unlikely that this will be so straightforward off 8lb higher but arrives with his tail up.

Consistent 10yo; he beat only two other finishers at Exeter (2m3f, good to soft; fine on good) and his pursuers appeared to underperform; however, the 7lb rise shouldn't be too damaging given he's performed well off similar figures in the past; solid contender.

Struggled in two chases in late 2021 and has raced exclusively over hurdles since; scored off 5lb higher mark here (2m, soft) in March and might have needed last month's reappearance run but still looks risky on this switch back to fences; usual hood removed; cheekpieces remain.

Verdict

Progressive hurdler SCENE ONE (nap) has the look of a chaser and it was never really in any doubt on his first attempt over fences at Fakenham. He looks well handicapped off 3lb higher. Heros went up 6lb for his winning debut over fences but that was just as emphatic and he can be the main danger. Others to consider are Ballybeen and Good Friday Fairy.[Alistair Jones]
