Form & Verdict
Won over C&D on sole start here (2022); 2023 and 2024 did not go at all well until he won at Wincanton (3m2f, good; most wins on soft or heavy) in October last year; the fences have got in the way on both starts since and he's not the percentage call, but he's well handicapped on his old peak chase form; blinkered first time.

Form & Verdict
Runaway winner of this race from the front in 2023 (soft) off 7lb lower; also scored that April but missed 545 days before this season and weakened right out of it in two hurdle races this autumn; latest was pretty discouraging but he usually needs a run or two to gain fitness and should be a lot more interesting back over fences today, for yard which is now among the winners.

Form & Verdict
Pipped in the Scottish National (4m, soft) in April; looked as good as ever when staying-on second over an extended 3m3f at Cheltenham (good; 14-1, well off the pace three out) in November but unseated before push came to shove at Newbury two weeks ago (3m2f race he won last term); should have success this term, barring mishaps, but this trip may now be shorter than ideal.

Form & Verdict
It was over 3m4f-4m1f that he recorded his superlative big-race hat-trick in February-April 2023 and he was fifth in last season's Grand National, so this trip is surely too short for him nowadays; he's now 11lb lower than in the National but has been keeping a low profile this winter and that may continue despite the returning cheekpieces.

Form & Verdict
Had an excellent hurdles campaign last term, going close in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham (3m, soft); now 7lb lower over fences than hurdles, having had just once chase in 2022 and another on last month's reappearance, both heavy defeats; made most in the latter and should have come on for the run, but others have a lot less to prove in this sphere.

Had an excellent hurdles campaign last term, going agonisingly close in the Pertemps Final at this meeting (3m, soft; 6lb lower today); his first go at fences under rules was in 2022 and he's having another crack at it this season, last time threatening to get competitive three out at Windsor when making a mistake and also badly hampered; jumps rather ponderously and has more to prove away from soft ground but he's well handicapped and likely to stay.

Form & Verdict
Very nearly 5-5 since the cheekpieces went on and he scored twice switched to fences this autumn; took the step up to 3m in his stride at Uttoxeter (soft) on latest outing and should prove better than that bare result, as he travelled up well to challenge but blundered at the last; 2lb rise is surely manageable at some stage very soon.

Sole chase win (15 attempts) was on this card four years ago, albeit usually running with credit since; 17l second to Annsam in this race two years ago; had the next 690 days off and pulled up at Haydock on return early last month but may not be a forlorn hope judged on that performance and he's on a dangerous mark, for a yard that's in cracking form.

Won twice in the mud last March (including 2m6f) and went in again at Leicester (2m4f) two weeks ago; now 7lb higher than last time but took that race by nearly 8l when well-backed favourite; may do better still and is highly respected despite new trip.

Verdict

A major revival from Annsam (second choice) is possible, in his bid to repeat the dose after a wide-margin win in this race two years ago, but ROCCOVANGO has been a winning machine since the cheekpieces were enlisted and may well be set for another success today. Olly Murphy’s charge is lightly raced for his age, particularly over fences, and brings clear potential. Hunter Legend won so well last time that he too has to be taken seriously, while the Scottish National runner-up Surrey Quest is respected despite this race being over only 3m.[Richard Austen]
