Seemingly nothing like the force of old; not proven beyond 3m either, with heavy defeats on his only two attempts at 3m1f or 3m2f; the former was on latest start when beaten 46l at 150-1 in the Ultima at Cheltenham and all this season's form suggests he will be a big outsider again.

Handicap runner-up at last year's Festival; made it 3-3 over staying trips in the Grade 1 Long Walk at Ascot (3m, good to soft) in December; not seen to same effect when 7l second to Ma Shantou in the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle over C&D in January but was conceding 6lb to the winner and the soft going perhaps wasn't ideal; could have a part to play if bouncing back to his best.

Ran rather flat in a good Sandown handicap last time but won a Class 2 the time before at Cheltenham (3m, good to soft), his fourth win over hurdles; once had the pace for this trip but may need further now ideally, so will do well to lower the colours of Mirabad.

Second and first in handicaps in 2024 on his only two starts at this track, with the win on soft ground (runner-up early on in a heavy-ground bumper); won his second start (3m, soft) last season and the same happened this term, when he battled on well at Cheltenham (3m, good to soft) in December despite wandering; up 5lb but respected.

Form & Verdict
Record of 3-4 last season and ran well at Bangor (2m3f, good to soft) on reappearance; unsuited by drop back to 2m last time; however, the penultimate effort didn't suggest she's crying out for this new trip.

Reserve; record of 3-4 in her first season (2023-24); good second in two of her three starts this term, latest at Ascot (2m3f); chance of going one better in this field partly depends on how well she responds to first-time headgear.

Form & Verdict
Record of 2115 since wearing cheekpieces, the wins on soft ground last April; ran well in competitive field at Cheltenham (2m5f, good) two months ago; could well have even more to offer in the retained headgear; one to consider.

Put a disappointing run of form behind him when returning to winning ways over C&D (good) 11 days ago, making all; whether he can reproduce that effort is another matter but he is still well handicapped on his old form.

His two wins came on soft in April 2024; out of sorts over fences and hurdles this term; cheekpieces return and has dropped to a career-low mark but doesn't look ready to take advantage.

Form & Verdict
Bumper/hurdle winner in 2022 and still has low mileage; badly lacks recent match practice, having been absent for two years, but market support should be heeded; handicap debut.

Maiden/handicap wins for Anthony Honeyball; long absences a feature in his profile but there were positives at Uttoxeter last month (2m4f, soft; first-time cheekpieces) where he ran well for a long way; stays this far; chance if the wheels can stay on.

Won twice over hurdles for Anthony Honeyball; pulled up on his stable debut following a year's absence at Chepstow (2m7f, soft) three weeks ago; first-time cheekpieces go on but hard to fancy.

Maiden winner here who returned from 718 days off to score on handicap debut at Wincanton (2m4f, good to soft) last January; there was some awkward jumping that day and again when creditable third in this race next time; absent since, has changed hands and left Anthony Honeyball; it may not be enough even if he returns in peak form.

Has gained all wins in mares' races, latest at Sandown (2m4f, heavy) five weeks ago on seasonal debut; good fourth in this race last year but may struggle to repeat that effort; now on a career-high mark.

Ran well on first four starts last season, latterly over an extended 2m7f, and she was back to that peak form when winning in clearcut style at Sandown (2m4f, heavy) six weeks ago under claimer Chad Bament; respected even though she's up 5lb and may well need a career best.

Verdict

Further wind surgery has evidently helped JIPCOT, who could well build on his emphatic Newbury success and show further improvement for his new stable. Beat The Bat (second choice) is a solid danger, while Knight Of Allen, Kamsinas and Punta Del Este tie in with the Fry runner and must enter calculations. Last year’s third Impose Toi is also in the mix, while Il Va De Soi and Spirit d’Aunou are interesting in retained cheekpieces.[Steve Boow]
