Dual Group 3 scorer at Sandown (1m2f) and Goodwood (1m4f) in 2025; resumed from six months off with a very good second of six in Newbury's John Porter Stakes in April so this veteran looks the one to beat dropped into Listed company here.

Held up; eight Group 3 wins are already in the bag, including this race in 2021 (his only appearance in it); has a slightly mixed reappearance record but he was almost as good as ever with his two wins last term, including first time out, and a return to that level would make this 9yo the one to beat.

Form & Verdict
He's run well on both previous visits to Goodwood, latest a close third in 1m2f Listed race here (good) in May after an absence, and the late headway he made when eighth in the Listed Wolferton at Royal Ascot (1m2f, good to firm) suggests this step up in trip could be a good move; each-way chance.

Best effort in a truncated 2025 campaign when fourth to Haatem in this race (good to firm); showed enough to think he retains all his ability when third in 1m2f Goodwood Listed race (good) on reappearance 25 days ago; could reach the frame in this again.

Unlucky second at Glorious Goodwood in 2024 when bidding for a notable 1m2f handicap double; best effort in a truncated 2025 campaign when fourth to Haatem in Listed grade at Royal Ascot; should be thereabouts, provided he's in top form after ten-month layoff.

Form & Verdict
He was returning from a year off when down the field in the Wolferton at Royal Ascot in June, and may have needed that first run for Kevin Philippart De Foy; classy performer for Clive Cox prior to £2,000,000 sale, making the frame in several Group 1s, and can have a big say if back to his best.

Sold on the eve of this meeting last year for £2,000,000 and finished a creditable third to Rebel's Romance and Al Riffa in the Group 2 Hardwicke (1m4f, good to firm) a few days later; withdrawn after rearing over being saddled up on an intended start at last year's Newmarket July meeting; subsequently left Clive Cox and hasn't been seen since.

Beaten on last eight starts having gone 3-3 in 2yo campaign (including here and in Group 2); however, the first seven of those defeats were in Group 1 races, with some very creditable performances, and he produced another when third in the Group 2 Hardwicke at Royal Ascot (1m4f, good to firm) last month with Palladium just over 1l further back in fourth; leading claims.

Form & Verdict
Won Meydan handicap (9.5f, good) in March and ran well in defeat in Listed races on next two starts (including here over 1m2f); however, no match for Al Aasy in Listed race at Beverley (1m4f, good to firm) four weeks ago and others have more substance to their claims.

Missed 2025; started this season at Meydan and Longchamp but returned to British soil with career-best form 16 days ago when a close fourth of nine in 1m2f Listed race at this track; more to prove on softer than good and this is also his first appearance beyond 1m2f, but that latest run gave some encouragement; either way he needs to find a bit extra.

Form & Verdict
Late headway once in the clear in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m2f, good to firm) in June, finishing seventh of 16, and outclassed in the Eclipse since (well beaten at 100-1); drops back in grade and the step back up in trip is worth a go, but he's 0-13 in Group/Listed races since winning the London Gold Cup in May 2024 and may again find a few too good.

Capable of very useful form but he is 0-12 since landing a major handicap at Newbury over two years ago and was unplaced in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot last month; supplemented at a cost of £50,000, possibly to act as pacemaker for fellow Wathnan Racing runner Gethin.

No win since landing two of his first four starts but has a largely consistent record in Listed/Group company since, including third to Haatem and Galen in this race on good to firm 12 months ago; again ran well when chasing home Damysus in Group 3 at Newmarket (1m1f, good) on reappearance in April; a subsequent Chester run was disappointing but his record suggests he's unlikely to stay down for long.

Ex-French 4yo who won Group 3 at Saint-Cloud (10.5f, good) last May; respectable Listed efforts on last two starts (including C&D) but hasn't shown enough on those outings to suggest he'll be making an impact today.

Won his first three races in France last year (twice from the front) and just 9-1 when brought over for the Derby but faded badly into tenth; just useful form since, best of three runs for new yard when 3l fourth of six in a Listed race at Goodwood (1m4f, soft) last time but he needs markedly better than that.

Lightly raced 4yo who won at Carlisle (1m3f, good to firm) in May on his second start since being gelded and followed up in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot (1m4f, good to firm); he's by Frankel out of a Group 1 winner and could take this rise in grade in his stride; key player.

Off 11 months after tailing off in a Group 2 at this meeting last year; shaped promisingly on handicap debut over C&D on return and firmly in charge through the final 2f at Carlisle (1m3f, again good to firm) three weeks later; trying to avoid trouble in running from stall 1 looks a headache today but zero shock if the 8lb rise underestimates him.

Didn't really take to hurdling but she relished the step up in trip in this code when easily winning a 13-runner handicap at the Curragh (1m4f, good) in June; she has to prove that brilliance was no one-off but it was certainly an impressive performance and she could have a part to play today.

Verdict

This may well be between the two William Haggas runners. The lightly raced 4yo Opportunity has been improving fast in handicaps and is very much respected but preference is for the 9yo AL AASY, a proven class act who has won the last two runnings of this race and looked good when winning at Beverley last time. The filly In My Teens bolted up in a 1m4f handicap at the Curragh last time and is third choice.[Ben Hutton]
