Front-runner who has an extremely solid record in C&D handicaps and was fourth of 18 over C&D (good) in May; Listed runner-up at Pontefract (1m, good to firm) since; capable of a bold bid if conditions suit; there would be a question mark about him on slow ground.

Below best on final two starts last season and same story on sole run this term, in Qatar in February; also has a hefty mark to defy but this front-runner was a fine second under an enterprising ride in a Group 2 at Ascot last July and has a strong record here, finishing second in this race in 2023 and winning it in 2024; capable of very bold bid from the inside stall.

Form & Verdict
Made it four wins from his last ten starts when scoring at Newmarket (7f, good to firm) recently; on a lofty mark under a 6lb penalty and it remains to be seen if he's just as good over 1m, but there can be optimism in that regard and he's clearly progressive; has run well on soft/good to soft.

Verdict

Having shown abundant promise on both 2yo outings in 2024, CENTIGRADE returned from a long absence with an AW novice win in June and can continue to make up for lost time by following up on his handicap debut. His 2yo runs came on good and heavy ground, so he should be fine with whatever conditions prevail. Spell Master has run some promising races for his new yard this year, including in the John Smith's Cup here, and 1m may well prove to be his best trip. He is second choice. If the ground is on the slow side of good then Nizam could be dangerous and he is next on the list. Cases can also be made for Cerulean Bay, The Lost King, Blue Brother and Mezcala.[Ben Hutton]
