Form & Verdict
Three-time Grade 1 winner over 2m; well beaten by Jonbon on his reappearance but finished considerably closer to that rival in yesterday's Tingle Creek; having such a hard race would temper enthusiasm should he turn up here, and he's tried 2m4f only once before when third in a big-field handicap hurdle (April 2021).

Admirable veteran, albeit isn't quite the force of old and gained this season's win in substandard Grade 2 at Kempton (2m4f); also perhaps ideally suited by further than about 2m nowadays; beaten twice in this race.

12yo whose career highlight came when winning the Tingle Creek in 2022; showed he retains considerable spark when winning Grade 2 at Kempton (2m4f, good) this January; he may prefer a longer trip than this nowadays but he's a leading player nevertheless now back in a handicap.

Acts on any ground; formerly a high-class chaser at about 2m, best form when winning the 2022 Tingle Creek; seems better suited by further nowadays and, despite his advancing years, managed to land a Grade 2 prize over 2m4f at Kempton most recently; recapturing Grade 1 honours at the age of 12 is not completely implausible, as he's technically still unexposed at this sort of trip and his two main rivals are also veterans.

Form & Verdict
Irish raider who's running over his optimum trip and has his tongue tied for the first time; Grade 1-winning novice who finished second in the Ryanair two seasons ago and would have been closer in that race in March (beaten 17l) but for a jolting error; that weakness in his game is not going away but he brings strong form claims and faced mission impossible on his return at Clonmel (Grade 2 on heavy) when trying to concede 5lb to Allaho; the tongue-tie is a first.

Has a poor strike-rate since winning a Grade 1 novice chase in April 2021 and current mark reflects a decline in his form; absent since disappointing in a Galway festival race that looked a good opportunity for him (was best in at the weights); new headgear needs to make a difference.

Form & Verdict
Signed off last season firmly on the upgrade and raised the bar further when springing a 25-1 surprise in the Old Roan Handicap at Aintree (2m4f, good to soft; won on soft) six weeks ago; that form might be a tad dubious when so many fences were omitted and he's now 14lb worse off with Al Dancer who wasn't beaten that far.

Form & Verdict
Enhanced his good record fresh when winning easily at Chepstow (2m3f, soft) and a 6lb rise was perhaps a factor in his Aintree defeat, though he rallied bravely there for third and now has a 14lb pull with the winner Jetoile (just over 4l ahead of him); one or two others appeal more but he should be in the shake-up.

Found to have a wound on his leg when last to finish in a 2m6f Grade 2 at Sandown on final appearance; pretty much as good as ever at times last season and succumbed only to Forward Plan in Kempton's big 3m February handicap (soft; effective on good); not handicapped out of this with Callum Pritchard claiming 7lb and he's usually mustard after a break.

More or less as good as ever in handicaps this season, winning at Chepstow and running a blinder when second in valuable event at Kempton (3m, soft) in February; arrives here relatively fresh and doesn't have much to find on the ratings, even though Dylan Johnston cannot claim his usual 5lb.

Form & Verdict
Former Grade 1 winner and has finished first and third in the last two editions of this race; while not the force of old, he ran a cracking race under top weight when beating all bar smart subsequent winner Boothill in a 2m1f Ascot handicap five weeks ago (soft); with this trip a better fit for him these days, he rates a major contender.

A longer trip may be preferable but he was a good second off this mark at Ascot (2m1f, soft) in November on his reappearance, and filled the same position at Chepstow (2m3f, soft) last time; also effective on good/good to soft; this highly admirable 12yo can give another good account.

Verdict

Even if Edwardstone runs after yesterday’s excellent effort at Sandown preference would be for JANIDIL who is competing over his optimum trip. A tendency to make mistakes remains an Achilles heel but this Irish raider is capable of mixing it at Grade 1 level when on his game. 2021 winner First Flow ran a mighty comeback race at Ascot over a distance shy of his best these days and he should also have a say.[Alistair Jones]
