Form & Verdict
Bought for £115,000 after finishing runner-up in a 3m heavy-ground Irish point last March and that form has been well advertised, with the winner placed in a Leopardstown maiden over Christmas on his only start for Willie Mullins and the third now really promising for Ben Pauling; could be interesting.

Staying-on second at 100-1 in maiden at Warwick (2m3f, good) in April on his second start over hurdles; 6-4 favourite when going one better at Newton Abbot (2m1f, good) in May; it's striking to see that this handicap debut (after nearly six months off) is over so much further and he seems to bring stacks of potential.

Form & Verdict
Irish 3m point winner on heavy; close up in two maiden hurdles (2m3f/3m; good to soft) on either side of pulling up in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham (lost a shoe); with most of today's rivals having something to prove he looks the most likely winner.

Lightly raced gelding who did well in handicap chases last season for Dan Skelton before losing his way; beaten in two points for current yard and he'll need more here; has won on heavy.

Scored by 8l on seasonal/chase debut at Carlisle (3m2f, good to soft) in October and was placed over 3m on next two outings; finished very weakly when upped to 3m5f at Warwick last month, which is a concern, but could plausibly still have untapped potential over marathon trips.

Form & Verdict
Bought for £50,000 after winning an Irish maiden point on yielding; finished tailed off on his hurdling debut (2m5f, soft) and again disappointed when allowed to go off at 150-1 for an Ascot maiden (2m5f); soon raised in distance.

Still unexposed under rules (particularly on good ground) but was safely held in first two handicaps, latterly on chasing debut in April; drops back in trip here; cheekpieces removed; others have much less to prove.

No threat on his four hurdle runs, most recently on handicap debut at Hereford (3m1f, good to soft); however, this lightly raced point winner is a possible improver now switched to fences and it will be no surprise to see a good run; first-time cheekpieces replace the visor adopted last time.

Form & Verdict
Left clear late on when winning a 2m4f soft-ground British point; beaten favourite in a modest Worcester bumper in September (good) but, with plenty of stamina in his pedigree, this sort of test could see him in a brighter light.

Absent since two below-par runs in November but returned from a break to win five-runner contest at Newton Abbot (3m2f, good) in September, and is now back on the same mark; seems best on good ground but once won a point on soft; can't be ruled out.

Achieved more on RPRs for his Newton Abbot 3m2f class 5 win last time (good) than Arctic Angel did for hers, despite bleeding from the nose; up just 2lb and he's hugely unexposed as a handicap hurdler.

Form & Verdict
Third in an Irish point and again in a soft-ground bumper here; pulled up and beaten 20l in his two maiden hurdles (2m3f; good to soft/soft) so much depends on whether this stiffer test of stamina can bring him on; that's not out of the equation.

Verdict

The one with the least to prove is ILLICO DE COTTE whose only blip to date came in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham when losing a shoe. The dark one is without question Fortified Fortune, whose second in an Irish point now looks a particularly good effort. The other three are all raised markedly in distance after underwhelming performances last time out.[Alistair Jones]
