Form & Verdict
Made winning chase debut at Wetherby (1m7f, good to soft) in October, pulling clear with a next-time-out winner; not in the same form in a warm race at Cheltenham next time, then crashed out three out at Newbury 17 days ago when still in with a chance; faces lesser opposition here and may bounce back.

Exploited a reduced mark to win easily in a small field at Ayr (2m4f, soft) last month and he's also effective on good/good to soft ground; his yard has done very well over these fences but from out of the handicap he's running off a mark 12lb higher than last time, and needs a career best.

Yet to win this season but put two below-par runs behind him when third at Newcastle (2m4f, good to soft; also suited by soft) a fortnight ago and remains on a good mark; one to consider.

Two wins in small-field chases last season and ran creditably on his first two outings this term; those, however, have been followed by two heavy defeats; well handicapped were he to revive but he's not proven beyond 2m1f.

Multiple Flat/hurdle winner; jumped soundly when respectable third on belated chasing debut at Ayr (2m, good) in November and seemed not to stay 2m4f at Huntingdon (jumped) next time; back to his optimum trip here and not discounted in first-time cheekpieces.

Form & Verdict
Lightly raced 7yo; shaped well when second to the classy Caldwell Potter on chasing debut at Carlisle in December and ran away with handicap at Ayr (again 2m, soft; jumped well in main, soon clear of three rivals) on Thursday; leading contender if making a quick reappearance under a penalty.

Hasn't got competitive this term and beaten 18l when sixth of eight on stable debut at Kelso (2m1f, good to soft) in February; however, he shaped as though this step up in trip might be a good move and his three wins, including two over fences last January (2m, soft), have all come at Ayr.

Made fine start to chasing career last term, winning twice at Ayr (2m, soft); won on good to soft over hurdles; faced tough task on reappearance in November but well beaten in C&D handicap (soft) subsequently on final run for Nick Alexander; can be in the mix on stable debut if rediscovering last season's promise; remains in same ownership.

Steadily progressive form; won two handicap hurdles at Carlisle (2m1f, good to soft/soft) in November, and she made a pleasing start over fences when second of seven there (2m, soft) three weeks ago, rallying; keeps improving and has to be considered.

Two wins at Carlisle in November 2024 (2m1f, soft/good to soft); mixed form since, including over fences; sound run back hurdling at Carlisle in March (2m1f, soft), but poor next time and has since had wind surgery; bit to prove.

Races mainly at around 2m; won twice under Brian Hughes over hurdles at Sedgefield (soft) last season, and he ran creditably on his first go over British fences when third of five at Wetherby (good to soft) in November; ought to be in the thick of things again.

Can be hit and miss in the jumping department but his profile over fences is generally progressive and he backed up February's Sedgefield romp with good second in fairly valuable series final at Carlisle (also 2m, good to soft) one month ago; respected.

Lightly raced 8yo; returning from a long absence when 11l second of seven on chasing debut at Ayr (2m, good to soft) in October, making much of the running; may well build on that and has possibilities here despite being 3lb out of the weights; due to run at Musselburgh (2.57) on Friday.

One of the success stories of the season, improving dramatically for new yard and rattling off four handicap wins (2m-2m3f, all on good); showed high-class form when routing six rivals at Kempton just after Christmas; impossible to discount, but he'll need another personal best in this higher grade and he also has to prove he's as effective on ground softer than good.

Debut for this yard when making it 2-3 over fences with an all-the-way success last week at Kelso (2m1f, good), justifying odds of 5-4 on his return from a 265-day absence; 2lb well in even with the penalty and he's very lightly raced for an 8yo.

Verdict

A 7lb penalty for Thursday’s Ayr win makes HOMBRE DE GUERRA’s task a bit tougher, but he was impressive from the front on that occasion, having shaped well behind a classy type on his chasing debut the time before. He gets the verdict ahead of Primoz, who meets lesser opposition than on his last two outings, and the consistent Coup De Coeur. The Rebecca Menzies-trained Disco Annie is going the right way and needs considering as well.[Richard O’Brien]
