Form & Verdict
Won this race on soft ground last year when it was rerouted to Warwick; that was his first run in a visor (kept virtually all starts since) and he's 6lb higher today, having also won on good ground at Ascot in March; ran creditably on reappearance and had stiff task in a top handicap next time; reverts to blinkers and 10lb claimer is recruited, but in serious calculations.

The oldest of these veterans, being a 14yo, and bare form this term leaves a question mark over whether he retains the useful ability that has been present for a long time; however, won this race off 2lb higher last year (soft) and has a good chance if back on song.

Had wind surgery last January and August, taking two respectable minor honours since the latest; rallied for third behind second-placed Copperhead at Cheltenham last time; needs another step back up the ladder but has his lowest chase mark since 2021 and looks one to consider seriously.

Form & Verdict
Ran badly both starts at this track, as a hurdler; 2023 and 2024 did not go at all well until he won at Wincanton in October last year; the fences have got in the way on both starts since and he's not the percentage call, but his old peak chase form was smart; cheekpieces (tried twice) return.

Unseated in this two years ago; ridden for the last three years by Lucy Turner; won the 2022 Kim Muir at Cheltenham and hit a major career high when dominating over the big Aintree fences (3m2f, heavy; 2lb higher today) in December 2023; out of form in his four starts since (one this term) and his very rare cheekpieces now return, but his trainer hits the target with far too many of her chasers for this 13yo to be ruled out.

Endured a long drought before winning three times on the bounce last year (May/October); second over C&D next time and his rallying, neck second at Cheltenham three weeks ago was his best form since 2021; while his smart peak (2020) should be beyond reach, this resurgent 11yo needs plenty of respect.

Verdict

Sam Brown has been a pretty reliable proposition since he won this race at Warwick last year but there are changes today (10lb claimer, and blinkers instead of a visor) and it’s Joe Tizzard’s two runners who top the list. Copperhead has found his old steel in a fairly spectacular change of fortunes but ELDORADO ALLEN shaped well when one place behind him at Cheltenham last time. Empire Steel may be best of the rest.[Richard Austen]
