Won in great style at Haydock (1m4f, good; unraced on softer) last July and put up a bold show over C&D this May; having been a non-runner at Royal Ascot where the good to firm ground was deemed unsuitable, he ran on it at Newmarket seven weeks ago and disappointed; can go well if back to peak form.

Probably acts on soft; off four months (given wind surgery) before shaping as if back in good form when mid-division at Glorious Goodwood (1m2f) last month, not getting best of runs and finishing with more to give, which might also be encouraging for this first crack at 1m4f; needs a career best in first-time cheekpieces.

His form eventually ran cold for the Gosdens last season but he's back on the up for his new yard, following his pleasing comeback at Newmarket with a decisive win at Kempton where he swept by late on (1m4f, AW); has low enough mileage to believe he'll cope fine with a 7lb rise and, despite not being Wathnan's first string on jockey arrangements, he's one to consider.

Two hurdle wins last autumn seem a pretty meagre return for his respected yard but he was unlucky when a strong-finishing third in the 2024 Chester Cup (2m2f) and much the same can be argued for his fourth in this race last year when denied a clear run at crucial stage (3lb lower today); usually makes inroads far too late, as in the Chester Cup and Northumberland Plate last two outings, and stall 1 demands some luck here, but a sound pace up front could bring him into the equation.

Two novice hurdles last autumn seem a pretty meagre return for respected yard but he was an unlucky, strong-finishing third in the 2024 Chester Cup; glimpses of that Flat ability on occasions since, but he made inroads far too late from out the back in this last year (11th at 13-2) and it was a similar story in last month's Chester Cup (8th at 11-1); something needs to change and such a wide draw probably means he tries to come from the back again.

Verdict

Master Builder is likely to be high profile after landing a gamble in smooth fashion here in May and he still has a competitive mark. The latter point also seems to apply to plenty of his opponents, though, and the highly progressive SAY WHAT YOU SEE could really be going places judged on his previous two runs in cheekpieces. How much rain has fallen on Thursday could be crucial to a lot of these, including seemingly to Irish challenger Truth Be Told who would have been the selection if he'd been guaranteed to get ground which was okay for him, but he was below form last June in a soft-ground race and has been withdrawn twice since when the going was soft. The shortlist is completed by rejuvenated Primo Lara.[Richard Austen]
