Moving up to 1m4f brought handicap wins at Newbury (1m4f, good; unraced on softer) and Newcastle (AW; impressive) this summer; creditable third in hat-trick bid in a strong handicap at Haydock (1m6f) four weeks ago; needs to resume his improvement but has a place chance.

Low-mileage colt who showed progress last year but was perhaps flattered in French AW Listed event on final start and failed by a long way to repeat the form on handicap/seasonal debut; mark seems stiff.

Two solid handicap efforts since making all in 1m maiden at Ffos Las in July; proved himself in the mud when fourth of 18 in Ascot handicap last time and the first and third in that both ran well in the Balmoral back there last weekend; surprising were this 3yo to have reached his limit after only five starts.

All starts on AW for this yard and he justified cramped odds when easily landing four-runner Chelmsford maiden (1m) in February; promising handicap debut when second over that C&D the following month and can be excused a lesser effort in highly competitive Good Friday event three weeks later; unexposed, particularly on this surface, and he warrants consideration.

Verdict

Having been gelded prior to posting an improved RPR on his reappearance, HIGH DEGREE (nap) could be set for a good season. He’s taken to build on that effort and register a first handicap success. Raammee (second choice) remains of interest assuming he settles better in a first-time hood, while Beagle Bay commands respect with further improvement plausible and Cogitate is another to consider as he ties in with Raammee. A few others can also be viewed in a positive light.[Steve Boow]
