Owes this high a mark to his third in a Group 3 at Newmarket last September and he's threatening to go the wrong way, with his struggles continuing when trailing home last in the rescheduled Silver Bowl at Carlisle; the cheekpieces tried there are swiftly replaced by blinkers.

Won debut (7f, AW) and came third in Group 3 at Newmarket (7f, good) last September; however, he was last of seven in another Group 3 there (1m, good to firm) on final 2yo outing and beaten 10l in a conditions stakes at Kempton (1m, AW) on March reappearance; the latter was a hot race but today's first-time headgear for handicap debut needs to prompt a vastly better show.

Form & Verdict
Only defeat last year came in a Group 3 at York and, having left previous yard for 50,000gns, he beat a subsequent winner to justify favouritism in an AW handicap on Boxing Day (7f); won that nicely enough to believe a 7lb rise is manageable, and clearly open to further progress.

42,000euros yearling buy, by Ten Sovereigns; 33-1 for maiden at Musselburgh (7f, good) four weeks ago and green off the pace before keeping on strongly in the last 3f to win by a neck, the front two clear; looks the sort to do a lot better in due course but others in this have much better form.

Won a turf claimer in Ireland and has added two AW handicaps (1m/7f) for current connections; however, has failed to beat a rival in his last three races and a tongue-tie joins his regular hood; risky.

Maiden (heavy) and novice (AW) wins last season before coming up well short in a sales race at York in October, again over 7f; gelded since but may need that procedure to have brought him on as this mark doesn't look a gift by any means.

Made a promising debut at Newmarket (6f, good to firm; strong form) last August; plenty went wrong at York on his second start and he showed his true colours when comfortably on top at the finish at Leicester when last seen in October; appeared to win that race in spite of the drop back to 6f and soft ground and he brings considerable potential to this handicap debut.

Won back-to-back nurseries in the autumm, over 6f and 7f; gelded in January; he was last on comeback run at Newmarket, since when he's also finished out the back at Windsor only to be declared a non-runner for having his leg stuck in the gates when the stalls opened; plenty to prove now and goes in blinkers.

Verdict

Now gelded after running himself into the ground on his handicap debut, it would be no surprise should CROWN OFFICE confirm the promise he showed last season. Spirit Of Saxony’s novice win on the AW now commands greater respect than it perhaps did at the time and he’s second choice, though Wezzeer, Sovereign Ocean and Sticktoyourguns are lightly raced past winners with better days ahead of them no doubt.[Alistair Jones]
