He didn't make his debut until December but this 5yo is quickly making up for lost time, finishing third in a Listed race at Salisbury (6f, good) on his stable debut and then running a huge race in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot (6f, good to firm), beaten just over one length into third off a 1lb lower mark; again raced freely when third in a Group 3 at Newbury (6f, good to firm) two weeks ago; still has potential after just six starts.

Would have finished closer than tenth in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot (6f) granted a clear run; scaled new heights when beating 14 rivals there (5f, also good to firm) three weeks ago, finishing his race off strongly; 3lb wrong under his penalty and while he has more good races in him, this one might prove too demanding.

He hasn't stood a great deal of racing since July 2024 but, two wind surgeries and a gelding operation later, he has shown he retains a good chunk of his former ability (Group 2 winner at best) this year, in a tongue-tie on last two starts; finished just behind Soldier's Tree when fifth in the Wokingham (6f, good to firm) but was in front of that rival in a Group 3 at Newbury two weeks ago; 3lb well in and has the ability to feature but his tendency to forfeit ground at the start isn't ideal in a race of this depth.

Quickly established himself as a smart sprinter, winning Group 2 and Group 3 prizes at Meydan (both 5f; good to firm and good) in early 2025; the addition of cheekpieces saw him return to his best when second in a 5f Group 3 on Dundalk AW last October; not quite at his best in two runs in Dubai in January and absent since; needs new blinkers to have a positive effect.

Climbed the ranks as a 4yo, ending that campaign with placed efforts in the Ayr Silver Cup and at Ascot; down the field on seasonal return but he hasn't looked back since, winning at Epsom (6f, soft) on Derby day for the second year in succession, doing best of the low numbers in the Wokingham (the others in his group have done well since) and then seeing off 19 rivals at the Curragh (6.3f, good to firm) two weeks ago; showed a fantastic attitude on that occasion and his 6lb penalty shouldn't prevent another big performance.

Justified favouritism (6f, good) on seasonal debut, taking Goodwood record to 3-3 and overall strike-rate to 4-12; a possible danger provided his progress can be sustained away from that track.

On the up in 2025, completing a hat-trick before fine runs at Royal Ascot and in the Ayr Gold Cup (beaten favourite in this race in between); had a wind operation prior to reappearance but he has finished down the field in both starts, the latest in the Wokingham; down in the weights but a full revival is essential; tongue-tie experiment last time is quickly aborted.

Profile is hit and miss but conditions won't faze him; he looked good at Carlisle (6f, good to firm; cheekpieces first time) in May and brings relatively low mileage but he was only midfield in the Wokingham and is 1lb higher today so needs a big personal best.

Made favourite but lacked experience when tackling the 5f handicap here last June; better form when winning at Haydock (6f, good to soft) last September and, after a low-key reappearance at Newmarket, he impressed when winning at Carlisle (6f, good to firm; first-time cheekpieces) recently; 1lb well in under a penalty; looks a smart prospect.

Verdict

Recent renewals have been dominated by high-drawn runners but the track has looked a fairly level playing field this week and there is a good spread of pace across the course. James Owen saddles two leading contenders in Soldier's Tree and Far Above Dream and the latter, who boasts an unbeaten record over C&D, could prove the pick of the pair. Tuco Salamanca, Sondad, Dark Thirty and Mitbaahy all have something to recommend them but the pair to appeal most are Two Tribes and FERROUS. The former has strong claims of following up his win last year, arriving on the back of an excellent second at Ascot, but Ferrous is marginally preferred. His second at Hamilton two weeks ago came in a small field but he was unlucky to miss out and the performance was backed up by the clock. He can belatedly confirm himself as effective on turf as the AW.[Paul Smith]
